The Kilombero wetland safari is an experience of a lifetime. You may never have an experience so real and interactive anywhere else... The habitat, wildlife, people, conditions and circumstances are all matter of survival & you get a front seat in this theatre of life.
The valley has recently been awarded RAMSAR status, establishing it among the world’s most important wetland systems. It is rich and abundant in wildlife, birdlife, aquatic life and plant life. These natural resources support an even richer variety of humanity, with fishermen, farmers, pastoralists, hunters, gatherers, palm-leaf weavers, timber merchants, trappers, honey hunters & craftsmen all making a living in and around the valley.
With two permanent camps in the Kilombero Valley, we give you an insight into the way of life in this part of the world like nobody can. You will learn of the circle of life that governs the people and interact with them by visiting fishing camps, timber points, farms, kraals and markets. You will interact with wildlife at close quarters, on foot, in canoes/boats and in strategically positioned blinds where you will get first hand experience of kills, feeding predators & sightings that you will not experience in any National Park.
During the wet season, the valley turns into one big lake... this is when all the game is concentrated on higher ground and you have lion prides, leopards and elephants right in camp. The wildlife experience is up-close and personal. The Kilombero Wetland Safari is offered as a 10-Day standard, but can be extended or shortened to preference. Activities are rough, but the experiences are highly rewarding and you can bet that very few people can claim to have done it.
The camps are very comfortable and luxurious, with modern toilet facilities, generated power, hot & cold water facilities, bar, lounge and the infrastructure of any high class safari lodge. Transport at this time of the year is mainly by canoe, motor-driven boat, off-road bikes and 4x4 vehicles. This is a truly unique safari experience.
